Massachusetts students lead the country in 4th- and 8th-grade math scores, as well as in 4th-grade reading scores. Nonetheless, teachers are still needed, as the state ranks in the bottom 10 in terms of pupil-teacher ratio, and reports teacher shortages in several areas including bilingual education, foreign language, science, and special education. Those who have obtained their master’s degrees will have an advantage in obtaining those and other teaching jobs in Massachusetts.
In addition, as part of their five-year recertification requirement of 150 professional development points (PDPs), teachers can earn 22.5 PDPs for each graduate semester hour they complete. Thus, teachers can stay current on new methods and information in their field of teaching, while stepping up their own pay-scale levels.
